Cleaning Microfiber Sofas
Our couches...our free from our aunt and uncle's garage couches...were needing a little care. They were long past needing a little care. I don't think I realized how much they needed to be cleaned until I actually sat down with a scrub brush in my hand. I saw this post from Chris and Robin's nest and decided to give her method a try. And the exciting part...it totally worked!
Please, please, please know that I am a clean person. I swear! I'M CLEAN! You just might not
know it from these pictures.
If you have a microfiber sofa you probably know that dirty shiny line that happens along the edges of
the cushions and arms.
Ugh. And now my dirty couches are on the internet. But let's focus on the after!
To clean your couch you need some rubbing alcohol, scrub sponges, and a soft bristle brush.
The first step is to spray the area you are cleaning with rubbing alcohol. Go ahead and saturate it. I know you usually try to avoid liquid with microfiber but the rubbing alcohol is the key. Second, scrub the area with your scrub sponge. Be sure to use a white sponge, or a sponge that is the same color as your couch, so that the colors don't transfer. Your sponge should start to look disgustingly dirty after awhile, which means it is getting the yuck off the couch and onto the sponge! Third, once the area has dried completely use the soft bristle brush to fluff up the fibers. When I first did this step it looked like I was putting scratches in the fabric but as it all fluffed up the scratches went away and the fabric was smooth.
The result?
So much better right?
Great Tip! Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see that you got the couch done. It was on our to do list when you moved in but we just didn't get to it. Looks great!
ReplyDeleteLooks great. And folks, I can testify to her cleanliness! I lived with her for a year and she was by far the neatest. :)
ReplyDeleteGreat tips! I'm going to try this on my microfiber sectional that has my sons grubby little cookie stains on it. I've been looking for a cleaning agent for months and I'm going to try yours because I have everything on hand. Thanks a bunch!
ReplyDeleteI have to know where you got your rug. It's exactly what we are looking for!!!
ReplyDeleteWe put off buying leather and bought microfiber couches because we thought with kids we could at least clean them. I really have regretted it. Sure it is great that you can easily clean them but now the problem is that you HAVE TO clean them and constantly! It has become easier and less often now that they are older but even though we don't allow eating and drinking on them, they still magically get dirty. For a while I had given up but I cannot wait to try with alcohol.
We got it as Home Depot and it is a great rug! Love it!
DeleteAnd I know exactly what you mean with the Microfiber. Pros and cons for sure!
Thanks for helping to save big red from the trash bin -- worked great and he looks like new!
ReplyDeleteI have that same rug!
ReplyDeleteWhen cleaning microfiber couch....what do you rinse the grime in when the sponge is saturated?
